Building on software development research sponsored by the Mellon Foundation, the Internet Scout Project has made improvements to the Scout Report Archives' browsing and search features. Response time is now significantly faster, and you can construct more focused searches with greater precision in the results.

The Scout Report Archives is a searchable and browseable database which indexes over seven years' worth of resources from the Scout Report and subject-specific Scout Reports. It contains more than 11,000 critical annotations of carefully selected Internet sites and mailing lists.

The End of the Subject-specific Scout Reports
The Internet Scout Project is sad to announce that, due to a lack of funding, this week marked the last issue of the Scout Report for Social Sciences & Humanities and the Scout Report for Business & Economics. The last issue of the Scout Report for Science & Engineering will be June 20. We have, however, no immediate plans to cease publishing our flagship report, the Scout Report. Many thanks to our loyal readers.

Last Friday, the Kaiser Family Foundation and the Ford Foundation released a report on the public's perception of the AIDS epidemic in America. This release is in advance of the National Symposium on AIDS convening on June 5, which will, among other things, take up these findings. According to the 64-page report, "when asked to name the most urgent health problem facing the U.S., more than one in four Americans (26%) names AIDS" -- a significant decline from recent years, but still AIDS is second only to cancer (35%). Moreover, nearly half of Americans (49%) think HIV/AIDS is a "more pressing problem for the nation today than it was a few years ago." The survey presents data on the state of Americans' knowledge about the epidemic -- including its means of transmission, the number of Americans who have relatives or friends with AIDS, and their opinions on the Federal government's role in fighting AIDS both at home and abroad as well as the worldwide AIDS crisis. Opinions are also broken down by race, showing marked variance in the responses of different ethnic groups. An eight-page timeline of selected milestones in the history of the epidemic is also posted as well as a press release. [DC]

SD Online

The European Foundation presents SD Online, a special feature of the Sustainable Development pages. SD Online is a full-text database of the Foundation's resources that "explore specific facets of the sustainability debate and take advantage of the Foundation's research in a variety of areas." Beginning in 1998, the databases have grown to include a Networks database, tools database, as well as databases on SME support initiatives and education and training. Each searchable and browseable database must be accessed separately using the sidebar menu on the right, and each offers a brief explanation of the information within the database, as well as fully cataloged records. Moving Image Gateway (MIG)

This new metasite from the British Universities Film & Video Council indexes over 400 sites (with plans to add another 600) that "relate to moving images and sound and their use in higher and further education." The database may be searched by keyword or browsed by topic under four categories: Arts & Humanities, Science & Technology, Bio-Medical, and Social Sciences. Site listings include a one-paragraph description and a link. The Pentagon's Spies -- NSA

The latest electronic briefing book from the National Security Archive features declassified documents from 1965 to 1995 that offer a glimpse into the Pentagon's human intelligence operations (HUMINT). The page begins with an introduction and brief overview of these operations, and presents abstracts and the full text of 21 documents that chart the creation, evolution, and in some cases, abolition of numerous military service/ DoD human intelligence organizations and their activities. C-18L - Resources for 18th-Century Studies Across the Disciplines

This site is the homepage for C-18L, a long-running mailing list for scholars in eighteenth-century studies. In addition to information about the list and eighteenth-century studies in general, this site hosts two valuable scholarly resources. The first is Selected Readings, an online interdisciplinary bibliography of eighteenth-century studies that has been published monthly or bimonthly since 1992. These bibliographies are fully searchable via a keyword search engine or may be browsed by issue. The second resource of note is a collection of seven bibliographies of recent studies in several fields, most of them related to print and print culture. [MD]

Located at Boston University, CEES is a multi-disciplinary program that offers "education, research, and professional training in the fields of energy and environmental analysis." The CEES Website provides background information on the program and faculty. Of greatest interest to non-affiliated users is the research section, which contains abstracts and the full text of a number of papers by CEES staff. Also included are abstracts and links to publications written by faculty that are hosted elsewhere. [MD]

Produced and maintained by the Department of Information and the Documentation of Sport at the Institute of Applied Training Science in Leipzig, this database indexes some 2,000 sites related to sport, sport medicine, and the science of sport. Users may search by keyword with numerous modifiers. Search returns include a URL, the date the link was last checked, a description, title and author, country, language, and topical areas, among other details. Users are strongly recommended to narrow their searches as much as possible to minimize unrelated entries. Users should also be sure to open resources they select in a new browser window for easier reading. Almost all of the site is available in both English and German. [MD]

Amnesty International: 2001 Annual Report [.pdf]

Released on May 30, this year's annual report from Amnesty International (AI) takes particular aim at torture and the death penalty, as well as urging governments to protect rights that may be threatened by globalization. The report begins with a Forward by AI Secretary General Pierre Sane and an extensive Introduction, both of which are also available in .pdf format. The bulk of the report is a collection of entries for individual countries, grouped by region, which evaluates the human rights situation in the country or territory and AI's specific concerns there. Also included are five regional indexes and a section describing AI and its work. [MD]

Emerging Answers: Research Findings on Programs to Reduce Teen Pregnancy [.pdf]

Released on May 30 by the National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, this new report by Dr. Douglas Kirby reviews some 250 studies on teen pregnancy programs. The review finds that long-term programs have made a genuine difference in teen pregnancy, abortion, and birth rates, the last of which is now at its lowest level recorded. Kirby's study also finds no evidence that "abstinence-only" programs are effective or that sex education that covers contraception increases sexual activity. At the site, visitors may download a 21-page summary of the report, the press release, a FAQ, and related information. [MD]

The Next Big Thing (TNBT) is a full service online sources for news, information, and resources for those struggling to figure out how to do business in the New Economy. TNBT tries to view the New Economy through the "Big Picture" by helping users "understand how to learn from the successes and failures of the new economy's muscular Amazons and tiny bootstrappers." Along with daily news and top stories, TNBT also offers enlightening interviews with founders and CEOs from such companies as Lycos and Handspring. The Features section of the site contains advice, tools, and articles to help promote growth in burgeoning new businesses including strategy, marketing, customer service, and operations. Moderated message boards will help interested users interact with other TNBTers. [EM]

Provided by the Consumer and Patient Health Information Section (CAPHIS) of the Medical Library Association, this site is a very welcome aid to users seeking health care information online. As the report featured in last week's Scout Report revealed, there is a great deal of confusing and even incorrect medical information on the Internet. This site lists and briefly reviews 100 quality Websites using Health Summit Working Group guidelines and other criteria. These are organized by category, such as women's health, men's health, drug information, and so on. This is a solid resource for both consumers and librarians. [MD]

Orion Online [RealPlayer]

Orion online is the Website for two excellent magazines -- Orion and Orion Afield -- dedicated to the issue of humans living more harmoniously with our environment. The Website offers selected articles and features from both magazines as well as some content unique to Orion Online. Orion, which won the 2000 Utne Reader award for Best Design, features "the highest literary and artistic representation of the natural world." The current online issue includes three articles about the Monarch butterfly, considering both its aesthetic value and its role as a bellwether species in the controversy over the use of genetically modified foods since some research suggests Monarchs are adversely affected by the pollen from genetically modified corn. There are also pieces by well-known essayists such as Scott Russell Sanders and Anne Matthews as well as meditative photographs by Lynn Geesaman. Orion Afield is dedicated to reporting on community involvement in local environmental and economic projects. The current issue has less online content than its companion periodical but includes an interesting feature on Virginia high school students who built a piece of land art made up of five hundred tires to indicate the path a proposed highway would take through current greenspace. Unique online content includes an interview with Joni Mitchell discussing, in essence, her thoughts on how to unpave paradise and take out the parking lot; "Curmudgeon in the Wild" James Howard Kunstler discussing open space conservation as a means to revitalize community; and a gallery of paintings of the New England landscape by artist Forrest Moses. The new Country Music Hall of Fame opened on May 17, and at the official Website, users can learn all about the museum's new $37 million digs. Opera 5.0 for Mac (Beta)

On May 29, Opera announced that its 5.0 browser for Mac has moved from Tech Preview to Beta version. This speedy and versatile browser is quite small, standards compliant, customizable, and also offers some nice cookie management options. It is possible to surf with Opera using only your keyboard, and the browser includes a built-in Google search bar. Opera 5 for Macintosh (Beta) will run on PowerPC Macs with MacOS 7.5 or later installed, as well as on MacOS X in the Classic mode. Systems prior to 8.0 will require installation of Appearance Manager. This version will expire on August 1, 2001. [MD]

Dot-gov Goes Retail [.pdf]

This new short report from the Pew Internet Project reveals that Uncle Sam is one of the Net's biggest retailers. Last year, the US federal government sold more than $3.6 billion in products and property via the Internet, beating Amazon by about $800 million. Today Indonesia's President Wahid announced that he has dismissed four members of his Cabinet and the police chief, depicting the move as a peace overture to his main political rival, vice-president Megawati Sukarnoputri. Sukarnoputri's party, the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP), is at the forefront of the effort to impeach President Wahid and remove him office. The PDIP won by far the largest number of votes in the last election two years ago, but Ms. Sukarnoputri was unable to broker any deals to secure an outright majority in the parliament and win the presidency for herself. Instead, the job went to Abdurrahman Wahid, a compromise candidate. Wahid's nineteen months in power have seen a number of crises and political spats, culminating in the vote by parliament on Wednesday to hold an impeachment hearing against the president over claims of corruption and incompetence on August 1. Most analysts agree that there is a firm majority in the body in favor of unseating Wahid. In addition to the cabinet reshuffle, Wahid has on several occasions raised the possibility of martial law. Neither move, it seems, is likely to satisfy parliament or Sukarnoputri's supporters. The final outcome of the current crisis is still an open question. If Sukarnoputri does take office and steps into the shoes of her illustrious father Sukarno, Indonesia's first president, she will find that the question at the heart of the present struggle -- the balance of power between the parliament and the president -- remains.
