Flow of Funds of the United States, First Quarter 1999

At a somewhat slower pace than last quarter, debt rose at a 6-1/4 annual percent annual rate during the first quarter of 1999. This reduced rate of growth in 1999:Q1 is attributed largely to a "further drawdown in outstanding federal government debt," according to the latest FRB BOG Flow of Funds of the United States release, which has fallen more than $82 billion below its peak at the end of 1997. The median age of the US population continued to rise in 1998 to the highest level ever recorded at 35.2, according to population estimates by the Commerce Department's Census Bureau. Regionally, West Virginia continues to contain the oldest American citizens with a median age of 38.6 years, and Utah retains the lowest median age at 26.7 years. [MW]

Bureau of Labor Statistics researchers Kenneth J. Stewart and Stephen B. Reed conclude that "inflation would have been lower from 1978 to the present if the current methods of calculating the CPI had been in place." Their report, titled CPI Research Series Using Current Methods, 1978-98 was preprinted for the June 1999 Monthly Labor Review. Stewart and Reed describe changes from CPI-U calculation methods to CPI-U-RS, and present percent changes for all items and major groups using both methods from 1978 to 1998. Notable data this month includes the June 1999 Feed Outlook from the USDA ERS. US 1998/99 trade prospects have improved, according to the ERS, with increased exports of corn and sorghum. Ending stocks are forecast at 49.3 million tons, down 1.2 million from last month, but they remain at the highest level since 1992/93's 63.1 million. [MW]

This week's In the News looks at the establishment of a Nasdaq mirror in Japan. These six resources provide news coverage and company information on the National Association of Securities Dealers (NASD) and Softbank collaboration. On June 17, 1999, the Tokyo-based internet group Softbank and the NASD, the largest securities-industry, self-regulatory organization in the US, signed an agreement to launch a new electronic stock market in Japan by the fourth quarter 2000. According to a NASD press release, Nasdaq-Japan will share the American Nasdaq's screen-based approach to trading equity securities and will use the Internet as a major conduit. The new exchange will allow Japanese traders to invest in top US technology stocks during US trading hours in addition to emerging Japanese companies not listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. Although organizers hope the venture will help stimulate Japan's lagging economy, skeptics are wary of a system that depends so heavily on new technology. As Wired News reporter David Lazarus maintains, "it will take a while--perhaps a very long while--before Japan gets anywhere near the more than 630,000 daily online trades now being logged on the other side of the Pacific."
